Chicago Braces for Frigid January as Polar Vortex Approaches

January 2, 2025
Chicagoans, get ready to bundle up! A polar vortex is set to grip the Midwest this January, bringing some of the coldest temperatures the city has seen in years. According to meteorologists, this arctic blast could rival the infamous winter of 2014, with temperatures forecasted to dip as much as 20 degrees below average.

Typically, Chicago’s January highs hover around 25°F (-3.8°C), but this year, daytime temps may struggle to break into the low 20s. Overnight lows are expected to plummet into single digits and even subzero territory. When you factor in the wind chill—a notorious Chicago winter trademark—conditions could feel dangerously cold.

Adding to the challenge, heavy snowfall is expected throughout the month. Chicago usually sees around 17 snowy days in January, but this year could be snowier than usual. Significant accumulation is likely, which could disrupt commutes, delay flights, and make the city’s already-icy sidewalks even more treacherous.

Wind gusts of over 20 mph will compound the chill, with wind chills making temperatures feel far colder than what the thermometer reads. Weather experts are urging residents to limit outdoor activities, dress in layers, and keep emergency supplies on hand.

The good news? This polar vortex isn’t expected to last forever. Forecasters suggest a slight reprieve may arrive in February, but for now, Chicagoans should brace themselves for a long, bitterly cold month ahead.

Chicago may soon empower its police department with sweeping authority to impose temporary curfews across the city in response to large teen gatherings and potential unrest. The revised proposal was introduced by Alderman Brian Hopkins following recent talks with Mayor Brandon Johnson and Police Superintendent Larry Snelling. It comes as the city grapples with the rise of “teen takeovers” — large, often chaotic gatherings of minors in public spaces that have led to violence and property damage. Unlike a blanket citywide curfew, the new ordinance would allow police to enact curfews in real time and in specific locations where they anticipate trouble. If passed, district commanders or the police superintendent could declare a curfew on short notice. A verbal warning would be required at least 30 minutes before enforcement begins, giving crowds time to clear out.
